Ben Macdui
8th March 2026
Ben Macdui is high, second only to Ben Nevis. Standing at a lofty 1309 metres on a very large plateau, the snowpack is always going to be slightly different. Unaffected by the warm temperatures, weaknesses within the snowpack persist mainly on shady aspects. The cloud level lingered around 1000 metres for the majority of the day preventing big vistas. Snow cover remains good at high levels but lower down, many areas starting to break up and resemble more summer like underfoot terrain.
Sastrugi which is readily seen on the high plateau. A sure indicator of strong winds after fresh snowfall.
Looking across towards Sron na Lairige. Multiple crown walls spotted – North-East aspect above 1000 meters.
