Firm snow

19th March 2026

A stunning day with light winds and wall to wall sunshine.  Although it felt warm, the snow remains very firm on most aspects with serious run out potential on steep slopes in the event of a fall.  Below 900 metres, many paths are becoming clear of snow with the odd patch to cross, but large firm snow fields remain above this altitude. Some tricky areas to cross where snow remains in sections of the boulder fields, with potential for the snow to collapse into a sizeable hole.

Looking across Coire an Lochain from the top of the East flank- twin burns area.

A smiley happy group from Glenmore Lodge just before gearing up to practice their crampon techniques on the firm snowy slopes above.

Kitting up before ascent, firm snow at all levels.

Topping out on this East aspect, although sun exposed it was still firm.

Ice remains in the shaded Lochain below.

This glide crack runs the full width of “The Great Slab”, coire an Lochain. Rock fall was observed from “The Vent” just above.

Looking South down the Lairig Ghru, the “Pools of Dee” in the bottom, Cairn Toul and Score an Lochain Uaine above.

Again looking South down the Lairig Ghru, with Bod an Deamhain (Devils Point), middle left.

The East flank of Sron na Lairige, the summit of Braeriach just peeking out behind.
