Murky morning, bright afternoon

22nd March 2026

It was a murky start to the day with poor visibility and intermittent drizzle. The sun came out late morning and it was dry and bright for the reminder of the day.

The freezing level dropped throughout the day. The summit temperature on Cairn Gorm was 1 degree Celsius at 0900 and had decreased to -3 degrees Celsius by 1400. It felt bitterly cold at summit level in the strong Westerly winds. At lower elevations there was certainly some warmth felt when the sun made an appearance.

The snow was soft initially but became firmer as the freezing level dropped.

Mess of Pottage mid morning before the clouds lifted.  Falling ice could be heard in the coire in the mild temperatures, before the freezing level dropped.

Beinn Mheadhoin late morning as the clouds started to disperse.

Coire Cas and the Coronation Wall.

Looking down through the lower parts of the Cairngorm ski area towards Loch Morlich.

Coire an t-Sneachda.

Looking across Fiaciall Ridge to the cliffs of Coire an Lochain. There are still some significant cornices around the coire rim.

Coire an Lochain with the ever widening glide crack at the top of The Great Slab visible. It can be seen here on 19th March.
