Easing Westerly winds

26th March 2026

A cold start to the day with summit temperatures of -8 Celsius first thing. Strong winds remained Westerly in direction with some occasional light snow showers.  The old snowpack is very firm with serious run out potential on steep slopes.  At higher levels, underfoot conditions are a mix of firm windblown snow where its hard going on foot as there’s a tendency to punch through, elsewhere the ground is covered in rime or windblown areas are very firm and icy.

A rock covered in rime ice, this indicates recent wind direction as rime grows into the wind.
