A stormy day

12th April 2026

Another stormy day in the Cairngorms with winds increasing through the afternoon, gusting up to 85mph.  Snowfall was heavy at times with deep drifts forming in lee areas. The freezing level steadily rose to 1000 metres by midday and snowpack stability improved at lower levels. Some brighter spells arrived during the afternoon, winds are expected to gradually ease over the next 24 hours.

Very poor visibility during heavy snow showers.

 

A few minutes later the squally showers passed.  Cairngorm ski area, with Cas ridge on the right.

 

Coire an t-Sneachda enveloped in spindrift and a passing shower.

 

Looking up the Cas ridge, visibility improved below 800 metres.

 

At 700 metres, deep drifts accumulated on steep North facing banks.

 

Sunshine and showers at lower levels.
