Bright cold and breezy

10th December 2021

After yesterday’s slightly milder temperatures the snowpack surface has become firm and icy at lower altitudes.  For those on foot the breakable crust remains a hindrance in various locations mainly off the beaten track.  If travelling by ski soft windslab overlies the firm snowpack in lee areas at higher altitudes; however below 700 metres, the snowpack surface is firm and icy leading to a precarious and rattly descent over lumps, bumps, glazed rock and heather.

Looking towards Coire an t-Sneachda. Drifting snow from the Westerly wind can be seen on the Fiachaill of Sneachda.
