Storm force winds

29th December 2024

It was another mild day with storm force winds. The temperature did drop throughout the morning but failed to reach 0 degrees celsius before it started to rise again.

The storm force winds prevented much progress today with gusts over 100mph recorded on the summit of Cairn Gorm. What little snow remains is mostly above 1000 metres and on Southerly aspects, making it challenging to get too.

Overnight rain cleared to give a mostly dry morning and some views of the hills. The light snow that was forecast for late afternoon never materialised.

The remaining snow will continue to thaw overnight and into tomorrow with heavy rain forecast, falling as sleet only on the highest summits. The freezing level is due to drop throughout the afternoon but the weather picture is complex and there is uncertainty as to how far south the front will dip on Monday and correspondingly how much of a dip there will be in the freezing level. When, and if, the freezing level does drop beneath the summits, the old snow will become firm, and there will be a light superficial dusting of snow down to lower elevations. Once again, keep a close eye on the latest forecasts.
