Cold and Cloudy

28th March 2016

A cool Northerly wind on the tops is a reminder that winter is not over. The old snow is firm snow-ice in many places, and where steep, awareness of the poor run-outs onto rocks below helps keep focus on being surefooted. !!  The new snow is quite slabby but is well bonded to the old snow surface in most places. Where is gets deeper, which is only in localised places above 1000m, weaknesses within the new snow produced some cracks and  blocky failures underfoot. Mostly though these areas can be avoided, if you can see that is!
