Inversion and Windslab

9th January 2018

A day of poor visibility high in the corries and on the tops. Inversion conditions have “squeezed” the clouds and increased the wind speed over the Cairngorms. A lot of drifting overnight and during the day has developed areas of hard windslab on Northerly aspects, this overlies a weak layer in many places, presenting unstable snowpack conditions, especially in steep areas.

Snowpack conditions today on a North aspect at 1100 m, 2 fails on weak layers of sugar like facetted grains. this is overlain by firm windslab.

Great bit of film- really spells out the potential hazard. Thanks for all the work- and for keeping me entertained as I sit at my desk…
