Dust on crust

15th December 2020

Covid-19

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service would recommend that those wishing to enjoy the winter mountains refer to Mountaineering Scotland and Scottish Government advice regarding Covid-19 and outdoor activities.

The snow surface was widely frozen this morning due to the cold airmass over the Cairngorms overnight. The crust was mostly holding, but was breakable lower down making for tedious progress on skis. Above 1100 metres there was some “dust on crust” on north aspects deposited by the strong southerly winds.

Another windy day in prospect for tomorrow.

Brighter looking out to the north from Coire Cas. The visibility was poor above 1000m in the mountains.
