Beautiful and Wild

2nd March 2022

A beautiful and wild day on the Northern Cairngorms.

Strong South-Easterly winds accelerating over the plateau made progress into Coire an Lochain quite challenging.

More strong winds forecast for tomorrow.

The view across Loch Morlich this morning. Looking lovely up the hill.

The view form the ski area less than a hour later. Not looking quite so appealing at higher levels.

At around 800 metres the snowpack was scoured and firm.

A few thin strips of windslab remain such as on this slope here. However, most soft snow was scoured and removed by the strong winds.

The view up to the crags of Coire an Lochan. The haziness is due to snow blowing of the plateau. However, very little of it was accumulating, it was just blowing around in the strong winds and dissipating into the atmosphere.

The twin burns slope in Coire an Lochan. Streamers of spindrift can be seen blowing along the surface. However, these were not accumulating in the strong winds.

Afternoon view of Cairngorm from the SAIS office, the mountain tops hidden by a bank of cloud. Winds speeds had increased and sprindrift from the mountain was reaching Glenmore Lodge.
