Still windy

1st February 2023

Today while still very windy was a little bit less windy than yesterday. Overnight snow showers cleared to give a dry cold day with some views. Snow was continuing to drift in the strong winds. The old snowpack is very firm and icy, with localised accumulations of windslab in some wind sheltered areas, in other areas the winds have been so strong snow has drifted to lower levels leaving the firm and icy terrain exposed. All change tomorrow as the freezing level goes above the summits.

Localised areas of windslab on Fiacaill cas. An area of windslab in the foreground on the NE aspect on the convexity with mainly  firm old snow higher up around the coire rim.

Fresh windslab with some cornicing at the moraines in Coire an t-Sneachda

Mess of Pottage

Aladins area in Coire a t-Sneachda. The cornices that remain will be prone to collapse in the milder conditions.

Fiacaill buttress, while not easy to see in this picture, areas of windslab are present below the crags.
