Cold and Wintry start – thin snow cover

1st December 2023

A good start in the Northern Cairngorms which has the most significant snow cover out of all forecast areas. Generally the snowpack is pretty shallow with unconsolidated snow on bare ground in most places. The snow has fallen without much wind therefore the lying snow is not wind touched and slabby. Deeper accumulation are around 30cm or so and are present in wind sheltered hollows and shallow gradient areas above 900 – 1000m on Easterly through South to westerly aspects. It should be a glorious wintry and cold weekend.
